  • Major: Behavioral and Community Health Sciences

Future Goals: This support will be incredibly helpful to me as an incoming master’s student living out of state. In the future, I hope to apply the skills and knowledge I gain through my program to help address the ongoing crisis in Black maternal health outcomes.

  • Major: Biochemistry major with a minor in Public Health

Future Goals: I’m currently a sophomore at UCLA majoring in Biochemistry. As a proud Chicana and first-generation college student, my journey has been shaped by resilience, faith, and community. I moved to the U.S. in 4th grade and have worked hard to overcome language barriers and long commutes just to access opportunity. My love for science was sparked through hands-on programs in high school, and today I’m committed to pursuing a career that blends science and service, while proving that our backgrounds never define our limits. Support like this allows me to continue dreaming big, supporting my family, and showing up for my community both inside and outside the classroom.

Future Goals: My goal is to graduate with an MSW, obtain my LSCW, and return to Skid Row, where I grew up as a homeless youth, to provide vital counseling services to homeless women and young girls who share similar experiences. This montary gift would be a game-changer, lifting the weight of financial stress and giving me the bandwidth to fully dedicate myself to my studies and ultimately,  allowing me to give back by working to serve a vulnerable community I once was homeless in.

    • Housing: $2263 total ($650/month)

    • Bus pass: $150 total

  • Major: Biology and Spanish

Future Goals: My name is Miriam García, and I’m a first-generation college graduate with partial hearing loss, born in the U.S. and raised in the U.S. since age 14. I recently earned my bachelor’s degree in Biology with a double major in Spanish from San Diego State University. Throughout my journey, I’ve worked multiple jobs to help support my family, especially my younger sister, whom I helped raise and support through school. Today, she’s a proud student at UCLA, and I’m continuing to pursue my own dream of becoming a medical researcher.

Despite financial and personal obstacles, I’ve recently been accepted into the highly competitive California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) program, where I’ll be conducting cancer stem cell research. This opportunity is a huge step toward my goal of contributing to life-saving science, especially for communities like mine that are often overlooked in healthcare.

Support from this program would help me cover basic living expenses while I participate in this full-time research program. It would allow me to focus more on growing as a scientist and advocate proof that no barrier, whether financial or physical, can stop someone determined to give back.

Support like this would help me cover essential needs and stay focused on building a better future. My dream is to become a clinical psychologist so I can provide mental health care to those who need it most especially youth who’ve experienced trauma.
